Marble Quarries - Carrara

In the Apuan Alps, the spectacular marble quarries reflect a suggestive image. This precious white stone has been mined since Roman times and is used for a wide range of uses: from simple objects to the most famous works of art and architecture. In the past, blocks of marble were transported with the ancient technique of 'lizzatura', a skill that is commemorated every year thanks to the skill of the few lyzers still alive.

In the artistic laboratories of Carrara, the marble museum and outdoor exhibitions, you can closely observe the history and art of marble processing. The mountain ridges rise clear and imposing above the rest of the Apennines. This landscape, with places still intact and quarries that sculpt the slopes, has a history that dates back at least two thousand years.
