Wine Roads - Chianti

The Chianti region extends across a vast area of countryside between Florence and Siena, bordered by the Arno, Elsa, Ombrone and Arbia rivers. These hills are famous for the production of the renowned Chianti wine, surrounded by high-quality vineyards and villages rich in history. The term "Chianti" already appears in 13th century documents to indicate an area that included the territories of Radda, Gaiole and Castellina, subject to the jurisdiction of Florence. This borderland has often been the scene of epic battles, as evidenced by numerous castles and fortified parish churches.

With the development of modern agriculture, the Chianti countryside was progressively occupied by villas and farmhouses which first became centers of the sharecropping economy and today modern wineries. A dense network of interests has been created around wine, the main good. The production area of Chianti wine is extremely vast, extending from Florence to Arezzo and including sub-areas such as Chianti Classico, Montalbano, Colli Fiorentini, Colli Senesi, Colli Aretini, Colline Pisane and Pistoiesi.
