The karst complex of Monte Corchia, located in the Apuan Alps Regional Park, represents the largest cave system in Italy and one of the largest in Europe, with a network that extends for over 60 km and reaches height differences of 1200 m. Its geological history spans five million years. Although exploration of the cave, the third deepest in Italy, began as early as the 19th century, only since 2001 has the public been able to admire the magnificent stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the flows, crusts and underwater concretions known as the cave pearls'.
Interventions have been carried out to guarantee the accessibility of the cave while respecting the extremely sensitive and delicate underground environment. For example, the lighting system uses diffused light positioned along the path, activated only when visitors pass by to minimize the impact on the underground ecosystem.
